Probiotics for Dogs: What They Do and How to Choose One

Updated on

Your dog's gut does more than digest food. It is home to billions of bacteria that support digestion and a large part of the immune system. Probiotics help keep that system in balance. This guide explains what they do and how to choose one.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are helpful live bacteria. Prebiotics are fibers that feed those bacteria. A product with both gives the good bacteria a better start.

Symptoms of poor gut health in dogs

  • Loose stools or changes in stool
  • Gas or a noisy stomach
  • Upset stomach after a food change
  • Low energy or a dull coat

If these signs last more than a few days, or if you see blood, vomiting or weight loss, see your veterinarian.

When probiotics can help

  • When you change your dog's food
  • During travel, boarding or other stress
  • After a course of antibiotics (ask your vet about timing)
  • As daily support for digestion

What to look for in a dog probiotic

  • Prebiotics plus probiotics in one product.
  • Gut-lining support: L-glutamine is an amino acid that the cells of the gut lining use for energy. Sodium butyrate supplies butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that supports the gut lining.
  • Immune support: turkey tail is a mushroom used for immune support.
  • An easy format: a soft chew is easier than powder for most dogs.

Our Vegan Core Defense chews combine prebiotics, probiotics, L-glutamine, sodium butyrate and turkey tail mushroom in one plant-based soft chew.

How long do dog probiotics take to work?

Some dogs show better stools in a few days. For full effect, give the probiotic every day for about 2 to 4 weeks.

The short version

A healthy gut supports digestion and immunity. Choose a product with prebiotics and probiotics, give it every day and talk to your vet if problems continue.
