How to Calm a Dog Down: Fast Steps and Long-Term Habits

Updated on

A dog can need calming for two different reasons. Some dogs are hyper: full of energy and excitement. Other dogs are stressed: afraid or worried. The steps are a little different for each. This guide gives fast steps for now and habits for the long term.

Fast steps for a hyper dog

  1. Stay calm yourself. Use a low, slow voice. Excited talk makes excitement grow.
  2. Do not reward jumping. Turn away until all four paws are on the floor, then give attention.
  3. Give a sniff walk. Sniffing is calming work for the brain.
  4. Give a chew or lick mat. Chewing and licking help a dog settle.
  5. Ask for a known cue. "Sit" or "down" gives your dog a clear, calm task.

Fast steps for a stressed dog

  1. Remove the trigger if you can, or move your dog away from it.
  2. Go to the safe space. A quiet room, a covered crate or a favorite bed.
  3. Cover the sound. Use white noise or soft music during storms or fireworks.
  4. Let your dog choose contact. Some dogs want to lean on you. Others want space.
  5. Do not punish fear. Punishment makes fear stronger.

Long-term habits for a calmer dog

  • Enough exercise for your dog's age and breed, every day.
  • Mental work: puzzle feeders, short training sessions and new smells.
  • Routine: meals, walks and sleep at the same times.
  • Rest: adult dogs need many hours of sleep. Puppies need more.
  • Calm support: a calming chew can support a relaxed mood on stressful days. Our Vegan Calm Chews use L-theanine, L-tryptophan and lemon balm in a plant-based soft chew.

When to talk to your vet

Talk to your veterinarian if your dog cannot settle, if the behavior is new, or if you see panting and pacing with no clear reason. Pain and some health problems can cause restlessness.
